John Cratchley Briggan's work as a composer (rather than an instrumentalist) is well worth exploring here; I hope this series of 'Objects' keeps coming...short compositions but like Cornell's Shadow Boxes, disparate ideas are collected and juxtaposed to wondrous effect.

about

Object #1 (2003) is a suite of sixteen electroacoustic compositions inspired by and dedicated to the work of the American artist Joseph Cornell. His primary medium was the “shadow box” which is a form of collage that incorporates the use of both two-dimensional imagery and three-dimensional objects. Cornell’s humble and modestly economical shadow boxes contain amazing depths of emotion, intimacy and charm. They each contain carefully chosen objects that are sweetly touching and yet resonate abundantly in cultural, historical and emotional ways.

I think about music and sound in a very visual and spatial way and I can see an exact parallels between the physical dimensions of one of Cornell’s shadow boxes and the space of time between the start and end of each of these electroacoustic compositions in Object #1. In both cases, there exists a precisely defined space within which something is happening. Individual sound elements or events are to me like physical objects; each has its own size, shape, color and texture and can be arranged in a electroacoustic composition like a physical object or image that is placed in a shadow box.

The intent of my work here was to create music based on a sonic experience of perceiving individual auditory events or shapes that move, interact and evolve. In my electroacoustic music work, sounds are removed from familiar context and used as a malleable medium in my compositions. I am attempting to explore basic ideas about what we perceive as music or as sound, and what emotional connections and intellectual associations can be drawn from music based purely on spatial, textural and contextual ideas rather than music stemming from traditional Western harmonic and thematic traditions.

The original limited edition CDs were hand numbered and included original watercolor artwork by Briggan Krauss.

The music on Object #1 was composed and arranged in ProTools and in addition to recorded sounds includes many sounds created or manipulated in Reaktor and Max/MSP. Most source material is recordings of acoustic instruments and other found objects except for the occasional use of various amplifiers for electric guitar, bass and for achieving other distortion and feedback sounds. There is also some occasional use of pure AM and FM synthesis but my main interest was in using recorded sounds and reprocessing them in various ways in order to create new sounds which are combined or sequenced to make new sound events.
